In 2016, Esther Chemutai, a teenage girl from Uganda, became involved in an unhealthy relationship with a boy she had met at a leadership camp hosted by the Redcross for two weeks.
When Esther returned to school after the holidays, she soon discovered that she was pregnant. She was allowed to stay at school until she finished her O'level National exams. However, with little to no communication with the boy she had known for a short time, Esther was facing an uncertain future. The pregnancy changed her path significantly and Esther was left with no choice but to drop out from school.
At six months pregnant, Esther saw some light at the end of the tunnel and hope emerged across her path! Wakisa Ministries came in to her rescue and supported her. While at Wakisa, she learnt vocational and life skills that empowered her to tackle life’s challenges. Among these, were assertive and self-awareness skills that enabled her to understand who she was including, learning the implications and consequences of unhealthy relationships.
Esther gave birth to an adorable baby boy and was later accepted back home. Two years later, Esther was given an opportunity to join the World share education sponsorship program at Wakisa Ministries. This resumption of school enabled her to complete her secondary level of education and joined University thereafter.
At the University, Esther pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management and graduated on the 13th of October 2023. Before her commencement, she had previously joined the Wakisa thriving staff team on the 18th of July 2023 as a sponsorship coordinator and worked through to April 2025. Through her resilience and support from both Wakisa Ministries and the WorldShare Sponsorship program, Esther was able to comfortably care for herself, son, and family and live a meaningful and productive life. She served the Wakisa vision passionately and with zeal. She’s forever grateful to God above all and to the Ministries mentioned for the support rendered to her.
Along the way, she received another opportunity to further her studies in the United States of America where she’s pursuing a Master’s degree in Global Management majoring in Global Business. This year, 2025, Esther had the opportunity of travelling with her son, who’s now 9years old, and they get to do life -together as a family.
Her graduation gown became a symbol of victory over shame, fear, and limitation.
